  • New Vegan Idioms, Aphorisms, Sayings.

I don't mind many of the references to animals, such as 'There are plenty more fish in the sea', or 'Don't count your chickens before they're hatched', but I have been thinking of vegan-type alteratives. That first one already has an alternative - Plenty more pebbles on the beach. The second one could be replaced with 'Don't count your beans until the beanstalk grows.'

'That's a different kettle of fish' could become 'That's a different bag of apples'.

    What about these and others?

'Your chickens will come home to roost' could become -

'Killed two birds with one stone' could become -

'A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush' could become -

'He bought a pig in a poke' could become -

'Killed two birds with one stone' could become - Fed two birds with one seed. Or shot two hunters with one bullet.
    Depending on your mood.
There's a place that's neatly tucked away, beyond the other side
A place of which you'd never dream there'd be a need to hide
For the building is surrounded by pastures pure and green
But the image hides reality, and the distance kills the scream
That comes from inside is never exposed to the air
For the place is packed with scientists who show how much they care
While the guard stands bravely at the gate with guard dog by his side
The same breed of animal is butchered inside

They usually shoot each other. And then try to claim it was an accident.

        I like that one too,
shot two hunters with one bullet
In the cookbook, Vegan Vittles by Joanne Stepaniak, there are many suggestions for alternative idioms. Some are stupid but some are clever. I try to avoid saying the traditional sayings, I don't like what they stand for.
Oh how I once loved tuna salad
Pork and lobsters, lamb chops too
Till I stopped and looked at dinner

You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

            could become:

You can't make a pleather purse out of a plastic garbage bag.

I bet there is some crafty vegan out there who can make a pleather purse out of a plastic bag.

'Killed two birds with one stone' could become - smash two butchers windows with one stone.( i have heard people say to kill two vivisector's with one stone) .

A block of tofu in the fridge is better than two in the shop.

I was wondering what the two birds in a bush one could be turned into.
